About Ibn Uthman Masjid

The Ibn Uthman Masjid in the Shuja'iyya district is regarded as second only to the Great Omari Masjid among the Friday mosques of Gaza. It is named after Shaykh Ahmad ibn Uthman, a holy man from Nablus who settled in Gaza and passed away in Makkah in 1402, and it was built in three stages under the Mamluks between the 1390s and 1431. Sultan al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh gave the mosque its courtyard and its present form in 1418, and the amir Alam al-Din Sanjar added the northern and southern arcades, the main mihrab and its dome in 1430. The Mamluk governor Yilkhuja al-Nasiri, who passed away in Gaza in 1446, asked to be buried in the mosque. It lies below street level on Suq Street in the Turukman Quarter, facing the large Shuja'iyya market.
