About Barquq Castle & Masjid, Khan Yunis

Barquq Castle is the Mamluk caravanserai that gave the city of Khan Yunis its name. It was built in 1387 by the amir Yunus al-Nawruzi, the dawadar of Sultan Barquq, as a fortified khan with a mosque on the road from Cairo to Damascus, to protect travellers, merchants and pilgrims. Its high stone walls, corner towers and gateway, with the minaret of the mosque rising beside the entrance, made it one of the most important Mamluk strongholds in the region. The centre of Khan Yunis grew up around the castle, and its old market lies outside the walls.
