Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, the great-grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ, was a leading merchant of Quraysh who passed away in Gaza on a trading journey, and he is buried under the dome of the mosque that bears his name. Gaza has long been called Ghazzat Hashim, Hashim's Gaza, after him. A mosque and a lodging for travellers stood here from at least the twelfth century, and the mosque was also a madrasa. The present building was put up in 1850 on the orders of the Ottoman sultan Abdulmejid, and its minaret and north and west aisles date from 1903. The tomb lies in the north-western corner of the mosque, which is in the Daraj Quarter of the old city, a short walk from the Great Omari Masjid.
