Hammam al-Samra is the last of the historic bathhouses of Gaza, in the old city close to the Great Omari Masjid. Its name is linked with the Samaritans who once lived in the quarter, and it served the people of Gaza for centuries. Steps lead down into domed rooms paved with marble, where light falls through small openings of coloured glass in the domes. The bath had a central resting hall with stone benches, a warm room and steam rooms in the traditional arrangement.
