Qasr Burqu is a remote basalt fort beside a desert lake in the far north-east of Jordan. It began as a late Roman post guarding the water, and an inscription records building there by the Umayyad prince al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik in 81 AH (700). The fort stands by the dam and lake of Ghadir Burqu, a stopping place for migrating birds, and is reached only by off-road track.
