Pella, known in Arabic as Tabaqat Fahl, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Jordan Valley. In Dhu al-Qa'da 13 AH (January 635) the Muslim army defeated the Byzantines here in the Battle of Fahl, opening the way to the conquest of al-Sham, and the town flourished under the Umayyads until the great earthquake of 749. The ruins include a Roman civic complex, Byzantine churches, Umayyad houses and a small Mamluk mosque, spread over a mound and the hills around it. There is a visitor centre with a museum and views over the valley.
