The Grand Mosque of Irbid stands in the centre of the city beside the old market. Its origins go back to the Mamluk period, when Irbid was a town on the routes of northern Jordan, and it has been rebuilt and enlarged since. It remains the main mosque of downtown Irbid, in the busy streets around the market and the old Ottoman buildings of the city centre. It is listed in the Ministry of Awqaf's report on historic mosques.
