Abila was one of the cities of the Decapolis, built on two hills by the village of Quwaylibah north of Irbid. It was lived in from the Bronze Age through the Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic periods, and its remains include a theatre, a colonnaded street, several churches and rock-cut tombs with painted walls. Excavations have gone on here since 1980, and visitors walk freely over the site, which sees few tourists.
