Umm Qays is the ancient Gadara, one of the cities of the Decapolis, standing on a ridge above Lake Tiberias and the Yarmouk valley. The town lived on through the Umayyad period, and an Ottoman village of basalt and limestone houses later grew over part of the ruins. The site includes a black basalt theatre, a colonnaded street, churches, the old mosque of the Ottoman village and the museum in Beit Rusan, one of the Ottoman houses. The terraces give views across the lake.
