The Shabandar Café has stood at the end of Mutanabbi Street since the early 20th century and has long been a meeting place for writers, poets and booksellers. Its walls are covered with old photographs of Baghdad and its people. It serves tea and narghile in a single high-ceilinged room, and it is busiest on Fridays, when the book market fills the street outside. The Qishla and the statue of al-Mutanabbi are a few steps away.
