The al-Wazir mosque was built from 1599 by Hasan Pasha, the Ottoman vizier of Baghdad, together with a madrasa, and was enlarged in 1686 with a high dome on its western side. The traveller James Silk Buckingham admired its dome and minaret in the early 19th century. Its dome is faced with glazed tiles and the interior has muqarnas decoration and Qur'anic inscriptions, while its round minaret is the oldest part of the building. It stands by the Tigris at the Rusafa end of the Shuhada Bridge, beside the Asifiya mosque and the Saray market.
