Mutanabbi Street, named after the 10th-century poet al-Mutanabbi, is the historic booksellers' street of Baghdad and the heart of the city's literary life. Bookshops, printers and stationers line the street, and on Fridays it fills with stalls, readers and writers. The street runs from Rashid Street down to the Tigris, where the statue of al-Mutanabbi stands, and it passes the Shabandar Café, the Saray market and the Qishla. It has been restored in recent years with new paving and facades.
