This historic house in Abu al-Khasib belonged to Sayyid Talib Pasha al-Naqib (1862–1929), of the family who held the office of naqib, head of the descendants of the Prophet ﷺ, in Basra. The family, descended from Imam al-Husayn, came to Basra in the early 19th century, and Talib became the leading figure of the city in the late Ottoman period and later served as Iraq's first Minister of the Interior. The house is one of the landmarks of the old notable families of the Basra countryside, set in the palm-growing district of Abu al-Khasib south-east of the city. The al-Naqib family also owned several of the Shanashil houses in Old Basra.
