Sayyid al-Qasim al-Akbar is traditionally remembered at this shrine as a son of Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba and a grandson of Sayyiduna ʿAli ibn Abi Talib and Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahra, placing him among the noble household of the Ahl al-Bayt. The inscription upon the grave identifies him as “al-Sayyid al-Shahid al-Qasim al-Akbar” and “al-Qasim al-Akbar ibn al-Hasan al-Mujtaba, popularly known as Abu al-Jasim.” According to the tradition preserved at the shrine, he accompanied his grandfather, Sayyiduna ʿAli, during the Battle of Nahrawan in 37 AH. He was severely wounded and died while the army was returning towards Kufa, after which he was buried in the area formerly known as al-ʿAtiqiyyat, now the village of Abu Jasim near al-Musayyib. He is also popularly remembered by the titles Sabʿ al-Musayyib and Abu Muhammad al-ʿAris. The shrine tradition regards him as distinct from al-Qasim ibn Imam al-Hasan who was martyred alongside Imam al-Husayn at Karbala.
