Aqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib was the elder brother of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and one of the most distinguished men of Banū Hāshim in his generation — a master of Arab genealogy and tribal history, held in deep affection by the Prophet ﷺ. He had a large number of descendants, and it is from his line that Muslim ibn ʿAqīl descends — the same Muslim who was sent by al-Ḥusayn to Kufa as his representative and was martyred there in 60 AH before al-Ḥusayn ever reached Iraq. Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl is documented in the nasab literature as one of ʿAqīl's sons, and members of this family were deeply embedded in the events surrounding Karbala. The ʿAqīlid branch of the Hāshimite family suffered particularly heavily in the tragedy of 61 AH — Muslim was martyred, and his sons Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm were subsequently captured and killed on the banks of the Euphrates after the events of ʿĀshūrāʾ, as recorded by al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq in his Amālī . The maqām in this location marks a figure from this ʿAqīlid family, venerated as part of the broader sacred geography that stretches across the plains between Karbala and the Euphrates — a landscape saturated with the memory of those who gave their lives in and around the tragedy of Karbala, and whose maqāmāt continue to be visited by pilgrims travelling the Arbaʿīn routes between the southern provinces and the holy cities.
