Shaykh Jamal al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Fahd al-Hilli (757–841 AH) was one of the leading scholars of his age. Born in Hillah, he taught at the Zayniyya school there before settling in Karbala, and his teachers included al-Miqdad al-Suyuri. He is best known for his works on law and devotion, above all 'Uddat al-Da'i on supplication. His shrine stands on Imam Husayn Street, also called Qibla Street, about 250 metres from the shrine of Imam al-Husayn, so many pilgrims stop here on their way to the haram.
