Habib ibn Mazahir al-Asadi was a man of the Banu Asad who settled in Kufa and was one of the close companions of Sayyiduna Ali, with whom he was present at the battles of the Camel, Siffin and Nahrawan. In 61 AH he joined Sayyiduna al-Husayn at Karbala, where he led the left wing of the Imam's companions on the day of Ashura and was martyred at about seventy-five years of age. He is remembered as one of the most devoted of those who stood with the Imam. His grave lies inside the shrine of Imam al-Husayn, a few metres from the Imam's own, in an enclosure apart from the shared grave of the other martyrs. Tradition holds that his tribe, the Banu Asad, buried him separately out of respect for him. Most pilgrims to the shrine stop at his grave during their visit.
