Sayyid Ibrahim al-Mujab was the son of Muhammad al-Abid and a grandson of Imam Musa al-Kazim. He settled in Karbala around 247 AH (861) and is remembered as the first of the Imam's descendants to make his home beside the grave of Sayyiduna al-Husayn and to care for it. He is called al-Mujab, "the one who was answered", because tradition relates that when he greeted his ancestor at the grave, a reply was heard from within. Many sayyid families trace their descent to him, among them the Al Fa'iz of Karbala and, through his son Muhammad al-Ha'iri, the Gharifi sayyids of Bahrain and southern Iraq. His grave lies inside the shrine of Imam al-Husayn, on its north-western side, in the portico that carries his name. A new zarih of silver and gold, made in Arak in Iran, was placed over it in 2014. Pilgrims usually visit it as part of their ziyara of Imam al-Husayn. His son Ahmad al-Harith is buried near Hillah.
