This mosque in the Ras el-Tin quarter is named after Muhammad Kurayyim, the governor of Alexandria who led the city's defence when Napoleon's army landed in 1798. He was taken prisoner and later executed by the French in Cairo, and he is remembered in Alexandria as one of its heroes. The mosque stands near the Ras el-Tin Palace in Bahari, and the street named after him runs through the old quarter towards Midan al-Masajid.
