The mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha was built between 1830 and 1848 on the summit of the Citadel, in the style of the imperial mosques of Istanbul. Its slender twin minarets and great dome make it the landmark of the Cairo skyline, and Muhammad Ali is buried inside. It is known as the Alabaster Mosque for the stone that covers its walls. The courtyard has an ablution fountain and a clock tower given by King Louis-Philippe of France, and from the terrace there are views across the whole city to the pyramids on clear days.
