The Gawhara Palace was built by Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1814 inside the Citadel, south of his great mosque. Fires damaged it in 1822 and 1824, and Muhammad Ali rebuilt it with marble brought from Italy. It was the place where the pasha received his guests. The palace is now a museum. Its audience hall holds a great chandelier sent by King Louis-Philippe of France and the throne of Muhammad Ali, and other rooms keep furniture and paintings of the period. It stands a short walk from the Muhammad Ali Mosque.
