Bab al-Azab is one of the gates of the Citadel, built in 1754 by Radwan Katkhuda al-Julfi, the commander of the Azab infantry, on the site of an older Mamluk gate. Khedive Isma'il later gave it its present form, with its two round towers and the double stair in front. The gate looks onto Salah al-Din Square opposite the Sultan Hasan and al-Rifa'i mosques. It is usually closed to visitors, who enter the Citadel by another gate, but its towers can be seen well from the square.
