Sharaf al-Din Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-Busiri (608–696 AH / 1211–1296) was the poet of the Burda, the ode in praise of the Prophet ﷺ that has been recited across the Muslim world for seven centuries. Born in Upper Egypt, he settled in Alexandria, where he became a disciple of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi, and he chose to be buried near his shaykh. His mosque faces the Mursi mosque across Midan al-Masajid in Bahari. The building that stands today was remade in the 1930s and 1940s, when the square was laid out with its three great mosques, and his tomb lies inside under a decorated enclosure.
