In July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces overran the UN 'safe area' of Srebrenica and killed more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, the worst crime in Europe since the Second World War, recognised as genocide by international courts. The Memorial Centre at Potočari was opened in 2003, and more than 6,700 identified victims are buried here. Rows of white headstones fill the hillside around an open-air musalla, with the names of all the victims engraved on a memorial wall. Every year on 11 July thousands gather for a commemoration and the burial of newly identified victims. The museum in the former UN base stands across the road.
