Palmyra, called Tadmur in Arabic, was a great caravan city in the Syrian desert that grew rich on the trade between the Roman world and the East. Its long colonnaded street, theatre, Temple of Bel and tower tombs made it one of the most famous ancient cities of the Middle East, and in the third century it became the seat of Queen Zenobia. Khalid ibn al-Walid took Tadmur in 13 AH (634) on his famous march across the desert from Iraq to Syria. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
