Ammar ibn Yasir was one of the earliest Muslims in Makkah. His parents, Yasir and Sumayyah, were the first to give their lives for Islam, and Ammar himself endured harsh persecution before emigrating to Madinah, where he helped build the mosque of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and took part in his campaigns. He later served as governor of Kufa under Umar ibn al-Khattab. In old age he stood with Sayyiduna Ali and was killed at the Battle of Siffin near Raqqa in 37 AH, at more than ninety years of age. His shrine stands beside that of Uways al-Qarani, who fell in the same battle, in a large complex built in recent decades.
