About Altunbugha Mosque

Jami' Altunbugha was built in 718 AH (1318) by Ala al-Din Altunbugha al-Nasiri, the Mamluk governor of Aleppo, in the reign of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun. It stands south-east of the Citadel on the old square once known as the Salt Market, and is also called the Mosque of the Square. It is one of the oldest and most elegant Mamluk mosques in the city, with a fine portal and an early minaret, and it remains a place of prayer in the neighbourhood.
