About Monument to the Lovers

The Monument to the Lovers stands in Córdoba near the old city walls, commemorating the famous love story between Ibn Zaydun (1003–1071), one of al-Andalus’s greatest poets, and Wallada bint al-Mustakfi (d. 1091), the daughter of the Umayyad Caliph Muhammad III. Ibn Zaydun, celebrated as the “Prince of Andalusi Poets,” composed verses of passion, longing, and elegance that immortalised his relationship with Wallada, herself a learned woman, poetess, and patron of literary salons in Córdoba. Their romance, marked by both intimacy and separation, came to symbolise the refined courtly culture of al-Andalus, where poetry, knowledge, and love were intertwined. The monument depicts the two lovers together, capturing not only their personal story but also the flourishing of Arabic poetry and intellectual life in Islamic Córdoba. It serves as a reminder of the city’s golden age, when it was not only a political and economic capital but also a centre of art, literature, and refined culture.
