The statue of Muhammad ibn Aslam al-Ghāfiqī in Córdoba commemorates one of al-Andalus’s greatest scholars and physicians. Born in Ghafiq, near Córdoba, al-Ghāfiqī (d. 1165) rose to prominence as a renowned ophthalmologist, pharmacologist, and botanist. His celebrated work Al-Murshid fi ’l-Kuhl (“The Right Guide in Ophthalmology”) became a landmark in the history of eye medicine, recording surgical procedures and detailing the medicinal properties of herbs. His contributions reflect the advanced medical and scientific spirit of Islamic Córdoba at its height. The statue is placed beside the Royal Botanic Garden (Real Jardín Botánico de Córdoba), a location chosen for its symbolic resonance. The garden, home to the Museum of Paleobotany and collections of medicinal plants, reflects al-Ghāfiqī’s pioneering research into pharmacology and botany.
