Qaryat al-Faw was the capital of the first kingdom of Kindah, on the incense and trade route across southern Arabia at the edge of the Empty Quarter. Excavations by King Saud University since the 1970s have uncovered its market, temples, houses, tombs, wells and many inscriptions and wall paintings, showing a wealthy town that flourished for several centuries before Islam. In 2024 it was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the Al-Faw Archaeological Area. It lies in the desert about 100 km south of Wadi al-Dawasir.
