Masjid al-Basha was founded in 1147 AH (1735) as an endowment by Abu Bakr Husayn Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Jeddah, known for his charitable works in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah. Its minaret was long one of the landmarks of the old town. The original building was replaced in 1978 by a new mosque of the same name on the same site, in Harat al-Sham on King Abdulaziz Street. Like several old mosques of al-Balad it is raised above the street and reached by a flight of steps.
