Jabal al-Rahmah, the Mount of Mercy, is a granite hill rising from the plain of Arafat, about twenty kilometres east of Makkah. On the Day of Arafah in the Farewell Hajj, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ stood near the rocks at its foot, facing the qibla, in supplication from the afternoon until sunset. The standing at Arafat is the heart of Hajj, and pilgrims gather across the whole plain on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah. A white pillar marks the summit and many pilgrims climb the hill, although standing anywhere within Arafat fulfils the rite. A popular tradition also links the hill with the meeting of Nabi Adam and Sayyidah Hawwa after they were sent down to earth. Outside the Hajj season the hill can be visited at any time.
