This stone building was the Madinah terminus of the Hejaz Railway, the Ottoman line that ran from Damascus to Madinah and opened in 1908. The railway cut the pilgrim journey from Syria from weeks to days, and the station stood at the end of more than 1,300 km of track. Since 1983 the station has housed the Madinah Museum, with around 2,000 objects in fourteen halls covering the city's history from the time of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ onwards, alongside the Hejaz Railway Museum with its old locomotive and carriages. The Ottoman Masjid al-Anbariyyah stands beside it, a short walk west of Masjid al-Nabawi.
