Banu Zurayq were a clan of the Khazraj, and one of their leaders, Rafi' ibn Malik, was among the Ansar who met Nabi Muhammad ﷺ at al-Aqabah before the Hijrah. Their mosque is said to have been the first in Madinah where the Qur'an was recited aloud. In later years the Prophet ﷺ held horse races in Madinah, and the course for the younger horses finished at this mosque. The old mosque no longer stands, and its site lies in the busy streets just south-west of Masjid al-Nabawi. The listing marks the approximate location so that visitors can remember one of the earliest mosques of the Ansar.
