Makkah
Shortly after the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif gathered a large army to attack the Muslims. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ marched out with twelve thousand men, the largest army the Muslims had yet assembled, and many felt sure of victory. As they entered the valley of Hunayn at dawn the enemy ambushed them from the hillsides, and much of the army scattered. The Prophet ﷺ held his ground with a small group of his family and Companions, and Sayyiduna al-Abbas called the Muslims back. They rallied around him and turned the battle into a victory, a day Muslims have remembered ever since as a lesson that numbers alone do not bring victory. The valley lies east of Makkah on the road towards al-Sharai' and Taif and is marked as a historical site.
