Al-Shu'aybah was the port of Makkah before Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast south of the city. The first Muslims who emigrated to Abyssinia in the fifth year of the prophethood are reported to have set sail from here, and it remained Makkah's harbour until the caliph Uthman ibn Affan made Jeddah the port in 26 AH. Today al-Shu'aybah is a quiet stretch of coast with lagoons and coral reefs, about 100 km south of Jeddah.
