A'arif Fort was built around 1840 on a hill guarding the southern approach to Ha'il. It is made of stone and mud, with two storeys, a main watchtower, a mosque, rooms and two courtyards. In the past a cannon was fired from the fort to mark iftar in Ramadan, and the crescent moon was sighted from its walls. It is free to visit and gives wide views over Ha'il, especially at night.
