Al-Qishlah was built in 1941 as a barracks and fortress in the centre of Ha'il, taking its name from the Turkish word for barracks. Built in the Najdi style of mud brick, it measures about 241 by 141 metres, with walls 10 metres high and eight cylindrical towers. Inside are two floors of rooms around a vast courtyard, 193 columns and a mosque. It is now a heritage site that hosts cultural events during Ha'il's festival season, and entry is free.
