Shah Jamal was a Sufi saint of the seventeenth century, of a Sayyid family, whose shrine stands on a raised mound in Ichhra, south of the old city. Little written detail survives of his life, but his shrine has been one of the best-loved in Lahore for generations. The shrine is famous for its Thursday-evening gatherings, when drummers play the dhol and devotees perform dhamal in the courtyard below the domed grave. Steps lead up from the street to the shrine and its mosque, and on other days it is a quiet place in the middle of a busy neighbourhood.
