عن Seleucia on the Tigris

Seleucia was founded around 305 BC by Seleucus I, one of the successors of Alexander the Great, on the west bank of the Tigris. It became one of the great cities of the Hellenistic world and, with Ctesiphon on the opposite bank, part of the twin city that the Arabs later called al-Mada'in. The site is a wide area of low mounds where excavations have uncovered streets, houses and public buildings. It lies across the river from Taq Kasra and the shrine of Salman al-Farisi.
