Salman al-Farisi was the Persian Companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who, after a long search for the truth from Persia through Syria to Madinah, embraced Islam and advised the digging of the trench at the Battle of the Khandaq. The Prophet ﷺ counted him among the people of his house. He later governed al-Mada'in, the old Sasanian capital, and passed away there. His shrine stands in the town of al-Mada'in, also called Salman Pak after him, about 30 km south-east of central Baghdad. The domed sanctuary also holds the graves of Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, Abdullah ibn Jabir al-Ansari and Tahir ibn Muhammad al-Baqir, and it has been enlarged in recent years. Taq Kasra, the great arch of the Sasanian palace, is a short walk away.
