This heritage mosque grew from the school of Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ahsa'i, a Hanafi scholar from al-Ahsa who taught law in Baghdad and was buried in his school in 1083 AH (1672). It became a gathering place for scholars and ascetics, and in the early 19th century it served as the Baghdad takiya of the Naqshbandi Khalidi order. It stands on Nahr Street (Mustansir Street) parallel to the Tigris in old Rusafa, among the historic mosques between the Mustansiriya and the Copper Market.
