Ali ibn Muhammad al-Samari was, in Shia tradition, the fourth and last deputy of Imam al-Mahdi. He succeeded Husayn ibn Ruh al-Nawbakhti and passed away in Baghdad in 329 AH, the year that marks the end of the Minor Occultation. His shrine is in the lanes of the old market near the Mustansiriya, in Rusafa, a short walk from the Asifiya mosque and the shrine of al-Kulayni. It is a small domed shrine with a prayer hall, visited by pilgrims together with the shrines of the other three deputies.
