Al-Aqmar, 'the moonlit', was built in 1125 by the Fatimid vizier al-Ma'mun al-Bata'ihi on the main street of the walled city. It is small, but it was the first mosque in Cairo with a decorated stone facade. The facade is carved with fluted niches, medallions and inscriptions, and it is set at an angle to the prayer hall so that it lines up with the street while the qibla inside is correct. It stands on al-Muizz Street, a short walk south of Bab al-Futuh.
