The sabil-kuttab of Abd al-Rahman Katkhuda was built in 1744 by the great Ottoman-era builder of Cairo, who also enlarged al-Azhar. Like other sabils it offered free drinking water at street level, with a Qur'an school for children on the floor above. The building stands on its own at the fork of al-Muizz Street and Darb Qirmiz, with arcades of wooden screens above and Ottoman tiles inside. It faces the palace of Bashtak and the Barquq madrasa.
