Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street was the main avenue of Fatimid Cairo, running from Bab al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuwayla in the south, and it is named after the caliph who founded the city in 969. It has the richest concentration of medieval Islamic buildings in the world. The northern half, between Bab al-Futuh and al-Azhar Street, has been restored and made largely pedestrian, and it is lined with mosques, madrasas, sabils and palaces, among them the Qalawun complex, the madrasa of Barquq and Bayt al-Suhaymi. It is busiest and most beautiful in the evening.
