The palace of the amir Bashtak was built in 1334 to 1339 for one of the leading amirs of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad. It was once five storeys high, and is one of the few Mamluk palaces that survive. Its great reception hall has a painted wooden ceiling and windows of carved mashrabiyya, and it is now used as a cultural centre. It stands on al-Muizz Street in the Bayn al-Qasrayn stretch, near the Qalawun complex.
