The Abu Ali Mosque was founded in 677 AH (1278) by Abd al-Latif ibn Rashid al-Takriti, a merchant from Tikrit, as Dar al-Hadith al-Takritiyya, a school for the Qur'an, hadith and Shafi'i fiqh. Its endowment paid for teachers and lodgings for students, who came from the Levant, Iraq and the Maghreb, and it is remembered as one of the first places in Alexandria to teach the Shafi'i school. It takes its present name from Abu Ali, a notable of the city who helped build it. The mosque stands in the old Gomrok quarter, facing what was once the port, among narrow lanes and old houses. It keeps its old structure, two marble foundation plaques and its old wooden doors and windows, and its minaret was rebuilt after the original fell. It is a registered monument.
