Mrkonjić Grad grew up at the end of the sixteenth century around the endowment of Mustafa Agha, the kizlar agha at the sultan's palace, who built a mosque, a mekteb, a caravanserai with twenty rooms, twenty-four shops and a water supply in the village of Gornja Kloka. The new town was called Novo Jajce and later Varcar Vakuf, after the waqf, until it was renamed in 1925. The Kizlar Agha Masjid stands in the centre of the town beside the municipal building and is a national monument. It was destroyed in 1993, and for many years its site was used as a car park. The mosque was rebuilt and reopened in April 2024, and today it is again the town's main mosque, with a single dome, a portico and a fountain for wudu beside it.
