The Esma Sultan Masjid is the largest and most important Ottoman mosque in Jajce, in the centre of the town. An inscription over the door dates it to 1749-50 and names the military officer Emir Mustafa as its builder, but local tradition attributes it to Esma, wife of a Bosnian governor, who is said to have also built two bridges over the Vrbas, and the mosque carries her name. The complex once included a fountain, a mekteb for children and a graveyard. All of it was destroyed in 1993, and the mosque was rebuilt between 2003 and 2010 in its original form. It is open to visitors outside prayer times and is a short walk from the Jajce waterfall and the fortress.
